New Poll Added: January Nats?

January 4th, 2009   Filed Under polls

With most countries getting ready for their national championships this coming weekend, the 2008 U.S. championships are already a distant memory. But what if they were hosted at the same time as most of Europe? It’s not out of the question and still being discussed for future nationals after 2009’s event.

There are obviously a lot of pros and cons. With a longer calendar, you may have less overlap in UCI races, and a longer season in most regions. U.S. pros could race longer in the U.S. before going to Europe, but if they traveled over there for the race-heavy holiday season anyway, they’d have might need an extra flight to come back before worlds. And then there’s the weather…

Let us know what you think with our new poll on the right.

GP Groenendaal - Melchers Takes Women’s Race, Eddy van IJzendoorn Surprises Men

January 4th, 2009   Filed Under 'cross race results, cyclocross news, racing

Sint-Michielsgestel, The Netherlands - Richard Groenendaal celebrated his final season and upcoming retirement with a race in his name today. Unfortunately his compatriot, World Champion Lars Boom couldn’t join the celebration and wasn’t at the start, as the stitched wound he has from a fall in Loenhout’s Azencross is now infected and landed him back in the hospital.

Mirjam Melchers took the women’s race, ahead of Sanne van Paassen and Reza Hormes.

In the men’s side, Eddy van IJzendoorn took a surprise win ahead of an in-form Bart Wellens. Groenendaal couldn’t follow Nys’ in winning his own race, and finished in third.

Check back later today for a full report with photos. …continue reading: GP Groenendaal - Melchers Takes Women’s Race, Eddy van IJzendoorn Surprises Men

More Top ‘Cross Shops Added, Issue 3 Sold Out

January 3rd, 2009   Filed Under cyclocross news, editorial, publishing

We’ve been adding more “Top CX Shops” to our listing, and it’s been recently updated with a few more shops. While your racing may be done, it’s a great time to visit the shop closest to you to check out season-ending clearance sales, get a much-needed bike overhaul, or see the latest ‘09 gear that’s finally coming in. It also could be prudent to stock up on tubulars if the shop has anything left - many stores had trouble keeping them in stock during the season and orders arrived late. And if you haven’t yet, you can pick up our Issue 4 if they haven’t sold out.

Tell them Cyclocross Magazine sent you. And while you’re there, ask if they have any more Issue 3 left. Why? Because we’re sold out! Unless you’ve already put in a back copy order in for Issue 3, we’re out!

Azencross' sprint finish on the big screen leaves one fan in disbelief. By Christine Vardaros

December 30, 2008. Today I awoke in a real panic. I thought it was race day. When the races are so close together it is hard to keep track of what day it is. Memories all string together to form one big timeless blur.

Just as I was getting out of bed to grab my slippers, book and head downstairs to look at a calendar for some solace, one of Jonas’ eyes popped open with a simultaneous puckering of the lips in anticipation of his morning kiss. Instead he was handed an impromptu game of “20 Questions.” “Is it race day today? What day is it? What date is it? Are you sure I raced yesterday? But I was talking to my coach while having coffee. Oh, HE was having coffee in California. Are you sure we don’t have to leave for Luxembourg right now? Don’t you think we should leave now since we can only drive 90 kph due to the smog alert? Why am I so confused?” …continue reading: 20 Questions, Smack Talk and Hidden Races - A Column by Christine Vadaros

Frozen Whoopdees Are Not For Eating - An Azencross Report by Sue Butler

Frozen whoopdees are fun if you don't eat it. by Sue Butler

Frozen whoopdees are fun if you don't eat it. by Sue Butler

by Sue Butler

The Azencross at Loenhout was a completely different race than last year. It was frozen tundra this year, with no long muddy run or muddy corners. This year, the biggest obstacle were icy corners, frozen ruts and in my case, myself and crashed-out girls on the whoopdee’s.

The legs were back and I had a decent start, considering I was a bet apprehensive of the long tarmac and the first sharp left turn. The Euro starts always make me a bit nervous because they are sketchy, and even the girl that will place 50th is trying to get to the turn first. …continue reading: Frozen Whoopdees Are Not For Eating - An Azencross Report by Sue Butler
